Batman The Dark Knight Review Roundup

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

image

I got out of the Miami heat this Sunday afternoon to check out the the latest installment of the Batman franchise, The Dark Knight.

Despite movie tickets costing $10 bucks a pop, this flick is well worth your time.  Christopher Nolan has outdone himself the second time around.  Christian Bale returns as the capped crusader and the late Heath Ledger is the consummate nemeses, the Joker.  Too bad Ledger is no longer with us as his performance is engrossing and reveals, once again, just how talented a performer he was.  Snug hunk Aaron Eckhart is a great Harvey Dent.

Not sold on my endorsement?  He’s a little roundup of the what others are saying.

My favorite, Roger Ebert.

“Because these actors and others are so powerful, and because the movie does not allow its spectacular special effects to upstage the humans, we’re surprised how deeply

the drama affects us. Eckhart does an especially good job as Harvey Dent, whose character is transformed by a horrible fate into a bitter monster. It is customary in a comic book movie to maintain a certain knowing distance from the action, to view everything through a sophisticated screen. “The Dark Knight” slips around those defenses and engages us.”

image Claudia Puig of USA Today insists that:

“Accolades must also go to director and co-screenwriter Christopher Nolan. The Dark Knight is a more thrilling, intelligent, morally complex and masterfully crafted film than any summer blockbuster in recent years. It’s probably the best superhero movie to date. Despite its comic-book origins and fantasy setting, the story poses timely and compelling ethical dilemmas, demonstrating that popcorn thrillers need not be mindless nor disposable.”

E! Reviews’ Alex Markerson sums it up best:

“Between them, Batman and The Joker are doing battle for the soul of a city—and it’s never clear who’s going to be the winner. It’s a titanic battle between not just men but ideas, a grand thing indeed for a dynamite summer film about a masked vigilante, and so good, it’s a pity you’ll only be able to see it for the first time once.”

I see that my blogging colleague, Laura, doesn’t have a review up yet, but I know she will.

Local Miami movie times and locations after the jump.

Happy 4th of July

Have a happy and safe 4th of July, Miami!

From Wikipedia:

Observance

  • In 1776, John Adams declared, "The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epocha in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore."[3]
  • In 1777, thirteen guns were fired, once at morning and again as evening fell, on July 4 in Bristol, Rhode Island. Philadelphia celebrated the first anniversary in a manner a modern American would find quite familiar: an official dinner for the Continental Congress, toasts, 13-gun salutes, speeches, prayers, music, parades, troop reviews, and fireworks. Ships were decked with red, white, and blue bunting.
  • In 1778, General George Washington marked July 4 with a double ration of rum for his soldiers and an artillery salute. Across the Atlantic Ocean, ambassadors John Adams and Benjamin Franklin held a dinner for their fellow Americans in Paris, France.
  • In 1779, July 4 fell on a Sunday. The holiday was celebrated on Monday, July 5.
  • In 1781, the Massachusetts General Court became the first state legislature to recognize July 4 as a state celebration.
  • In 1783, Moravians in Salem, North Carolina, held the first celebration of July 4 in the country with a challenging music program assembled by Johann Friedrich Peter. This work was titled "The Psalm of Joy".
  • In 1791 was the first recorded use of the name "Independence Day".
  • In 1870, the U.S. Congress made Independence Day an unpaid holiday for federal employees.[4]
  • In 1941, Congress changed Independence Day to a paid federal holiday. The residents of Vicksburg, Mississippi, celebrated Independence Day for the first time since July 4, 1863, when the Siege of Vicksburg ended with a Union victory during the American Civil War.

Celebration with fireworks over Miami, Florida, USA on American Independence Day. Bank of America Tower is also lit with the red, white and blue color scheme.

Independence Day, the only holiday that celebrates the United States, is a national holiday marked by patriotic displays. Similar to other summer-themed events, Independence Day celebrations often take place outdoors. Independence Day is a federal holiday, so all non-essential federal institutions (like the postal service and federal courts) are closed on that day. Many politicians make it a point on this day to appear at a public event to praise the nation’s heritage, laws, history, society, and people.

Families often celebrate Independence Day with a picnic or barbecue, and take advantage of the day off and in some years, long weekend to gather with relatives. Decorations (e.g., streamers, balloons, and clothing) are generally colored red, white, and blue, the colors of the American flag. Parades often are in the morning, while fireworks displays occur in the evening at such places as parks, fairgrounds, or town squares.

Independence Day fireworks are often accompanied by patriotic songs such as the national anthem ("The Star-Spangled Banner"), "God Bless America", "America the Beautiful", "My Country, ‘Tis of Thee", "This Land Is Your Land", "Stars and Stripes Forever", and, regionally, "Yankee Doodle" in northeastern states and "Dixie" in southern states. Some of the lyrics recall images of the Revolutionary War or the War of 1812.

Firework shows are held in many states, and many fireworks are sold for personal use or as an alternative to a public show. Safety concerns have led some states to ban fireworks or limit the sizes and types allowed. Illicit traffic transfers many fireworks from less restrictive states.

Major displays are held in New York on the East River, in Chicago on Lake Michigan, Boston on the Charles River, in St. Louis on the Mississippi River, and on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. During the annual Windsor-Detroit International Freedom Festival, Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario host one of the world’s largest fireworks displays, over the Detroit River, to celebrate both American Independence Day and Canada Day.

While the official observance always falls on July 4th, participation levels may vary dependent upon which day of the week the 4th falls. If the holiday falls in the middle of the week, some fireworks displays and celebrations may take place during the weekend for convenience, again, varying by region.

More after the jump.

Cover your virgin ears, as the South Beach Comedy Festival is in Miami this week. The party started Wednesday with performances that included shows by Mo Mendel and Louis C.K., shown above, and will continue through the weekend at various theaters around town. There will also be a live outdoor stage on Lincoln Road for “up and coming” talent.

The highlight of the weekend will be Saturday performances by D-List star and gay icon Kathy Griffin, whose show was so popular the festival added a second performance on Saturday night. Additional performers include Dave Attell, Louis CK, Jeff Dunham, Susie Essman, Andres Lopez, Jeffrey Ross, Katt Williams, and others. The winner of BIG 105.9FM’s “The Paul & Young Ron
Show” contest “So You Think You Are Funny” will also perform sometime this week.

The event is produced by Comedy Central, and the best of the best of the performances will be rebroadcast later this year. The William Morris Agency is also a sponsor, so they will presumably have agents around South Beach looking for talent. For more information check out www.southbeachcomedyfestival.com.

About Miami Supports the WGA Strike

Monday, December 31st, 2007

WGA union members protest at studios on October 4, 2007 in Burbank, California

Most, if not all of the TV Blogs have showed their support for the WGA strike.  It is important for ALL professional writers to support the WGA as writers should get paid for their work and that is why a blog about Miami and South Beach endorses the WGA strike.  Many TV shows are filmed and set in or around Miami and our local economy depends heavily on entertainment dollars.  The studios need to pay the writers fairly and put an end to this strike.

In addition to blogs, many fans are showing support for their favorite TV show writers by being very creative.  For example:

Some of the fans at Fans4Writers.com have come up with another great idea for supporting the writersthey have hired skywriters to fly over the Rose Bowl parade. There will be several planes bearing different messages, and hopefully at least one will be picked up by the cameras of the many television networks that cover the parade and broadcast it all over the world. As Ron Moore said on his blog, it is a very creative idea and another impressive effort from these amazing fans.

It’s also an expensive idea, perhaps not in the grand scheme of entertainment but certainly for a few individuals who are hoping to make a difference with a self-funded initiative. That is why there is an auction going on over at Fans4Writers, and from now until January 7th you can make a donation to the fund or bid on some great Battlestar Galactica items.

Among the autographed scripts is one for “Maelstrom,” the episode where Starbuck “dies,” which is signed by signed by writers Bradley Thompson and David Weddle as well as director Michael Nankin. These three fellows also autographed scripts from the controversial episode “Scar,” and the visually stunning episode “Flight of the Phoenix.” There are also several Ron Moore autographed scripts, including some of the best episodes of the series (in my opinion) as well as a group shot of the cast of Firefly/Serenity and an autographed poster of James Marsters (best known as Spike on Buffy the Vampire Slayer). So head over there and do some shopping … it is never too early to start gathering gifts for the 2008 holiday season!

If you don’t have the funds to donate to the skywriting event, GalacticaSitRep reports there is a parallel effort going on to allow fans to send personal messages of support to the Battlestar Galactica writers on the picket lines. The address to write to is “battlestar[dot]fan[dot]support[dot]wall[at-symbol]gmail[dot]com” and be sure to read the brief but very reasonable guidelines that are posted on the fan forums before you send your message. According to the posts, all of the messages will eventually go in a three ring binder which will hopefully end up nestled next to the scrapbook that “Mrs. Ron” is creating of memories from the strike.

For a primer on the WGA strike, start here.

Best New Year’s Eve Event in South Beach: Lewis Black

Monday, December 31st, 2007

Lewis Black

Lewis Black

Today, Monday, December 31 9:00 PM at Jackie Gleason Theater; Price: $58.50|$87.50.

Satirist and standup comic Lewis Black rose to prominence in the late ’90s with regular appearances as a commentator on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show. Obsessed with human stupidity, Black became one of the show’s most distinctive contributors with his weekly "Back in Black" segment; his delivery was so full of frothing, barely articulate bile and rage that it could sometimes obscure the sharpness of his social and political observations.

Lewis Black rose to prominence in the late ’90s with regular appearances as a commentator on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show. Obsessed with human stupidity, Black became one of the show’s most distinctive contributors with his weekly "Back in Black" segment; Lewis Blackhis delivery was so full of frothing, barely articulate bile and rage that it could sometimes obscure the sharpness of his social and political observations. Black graduated from the Yale Drama School and worked for a government anti-poverty program under President Nixon before becoming the playwright in residence at the West Bank Café Downstairs Theatre Bar in Manhattan. Black authored over 40 plays that were produced there and at other theaters across the country (one, The Deal, was made into a movie). Seeking to move into comedy, Black made his motion-picture debut in Woody Allen’s Hannah and Her Sisters in 1986, and went on to land a series of guest-starring roles on TV shows like Law and Order, Murphy Brown, Mad About You, Homicide, and The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd (the last of which was recurring); he also appeared in several more films, including 1990’s Jacob’s Ladder. Black’s standup star began to rise with appearances on Late Show with David Letterman and Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and he landed a big break when he signed on as a regular contributor to The Daily Show. Since then, Black has continued to tour the country as a standup comedian, and in 2000 issued his first CD, The White Album (which naturally took its art design from the Beatles’ release).

Miami in Print

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

SummerCVR

Miami is the happening place right now for setting and filming t.v. shows. Miami Ink, Dexter, Burn Notice, Top Chef, all called Miami or the city of Miami home this season. So it is no surprise the publishing industry is doing the same. The Sun-Sentinel provides the background and dossier of the latest offerings in print coming our way.

Magazine publishing continues to flourish in South Florida, undeterred by industry reports of declines in print publications, advertising revenue and circulation.

"The biggest thing everyone is watching right now is the tremendous growth in city and regional magazines," said Samir Husni, who tracks magazine launches nationwide as professor and chair of the journalism department at the University of Mississippi.

The new South Florida titles run the gamut from showcasing the arts scene and unique culinary specialties to dogs and breathtaking adventures.

My favorite out of the group centers around dogs and their Miami owners.

Florida Dog
Circulation: 20,000
Distribution: quarterly
Web site: FloridaDogmag.com

"Florida Dog Magazine captures the special personality, love and uncomplicated bond we share with our four-legged friends," said Jennifer Wise, who launched the magazine with business partner Helen Wozunk.

Wise and Wozunk were inspired after spotting several dogs on yachts along Fort Lauderdale’s New River.

A magazine for the nautical community and their pampered pets seemed unique, so they researched local dog registrations and dog-friendly publications and completed financial forecasts before launching last October.

"The biggest problem I find with people wanting to start magazines is that they don’t do their homework. They don’t know what is out there and they want to reach everyone," said Jenae Rubin, of Sales Power House Inc. in Fort Lauderdale, a marketing and advertising sales consultant.

Hulk Hogan the next “American Gladiator” Host?

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

14715759451press103200775617AM

Local Miami resident Hulk Hogan has inked a deal to host NBC’s remake of American Gladiators. NBC is apparently in the remake business these days. According to TV Week:

Hogan made the rounds at NBC’s Burbank offices last week and has accepted the job. The deal is still being finalized, but sources say both parties are committed.

NBC sees Hogan as “the perfect fit” for the “Gladiators” revival, sources say. In addition to his experience as a physical performer during his years with the World Wrestling Federation, Hogan has proved he can draw viewers with sheer force of personality in his successful VH1 reality series “Hogan Knows Best.”

The network plans to showcase “Gladiators” sometime in midseason.

You’ve got to give it to Hulk Hogan, the man keeps himself relevant after all these years.
